As climate change continues to increase global temperatures, extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and severe. Heat waves can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, older adults, and individuals with preexisting health conditions.

The Fairmount Corridor — Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan and Hyde Park — has some of the hottest summertime temperatures in Boston. It is essential for communities to be prepared with the knowledge and resources needed to stay safe during extreme heat events — and we’re here to help!

Join our 2026 Extreme Heat Preparedness Workshop on Saturday, June 27 from 1-4pm for an informative and engaging session focused on equipping attendees with tips, tools, and strategies to manage and mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat. Participants will learn practical ways to stay cool, how heat impacts us, how to recognize signs of heat-related illnesses, how climate change effects extreme heat, and how to access local resources to protect themselves and their families.

We will also be giving away 75 free Heat Safety Kits, which will include essential items such as electrolyte packets, water bottles, UV-protective accessories, and other supplies to help you stay cool. Kits will be given away on a first-come first-served basis. Everyone is welcome, but we will limit folks to two (2) Heat Safety Kits per family to maximize our impact across the community.

Additionally, we will be raffling off 5 window-unit Air Conditioners for free (every adult attendee gets one free raffle ticket)!

This year, we will also host a Resource Fair with local organizations and city and state program providers, offering attendees direct access to services that support lowering your energy costs, staying cool affordably, and preparing for extreme heat and other climate-related emergencies.

Language Access: Spanish interpretation will be available during the workshop. While the presentation materials will not be translated, simultaneous interpretation will be provided during the presentation and as needed throughout the rest of the event to ensure attendees can access key information, ask questions, and engage with resources throughout the event. Some Resource Fair tablers will also have staff present who are multi-lingual, and/or they will have Spanish materials to give out.
Childcare: Childcare will be provided during the event. If you are interested in childcare services, please indicate this in the RSVP form so we can plan accordingly and follow up with additional details.
Light snacks and refreshments will be provided as supplies last.
Location TBA, but it will certainly be in Dorchester or Hyde Park.
